A number of lipids have been used as a drug active. Lorenzo's oil, a mixture of glycerol trioleate (GTO) and glycerol trierucate (GTE) has been tested for treating adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). Medium chain monoglyceride (MCM), which is predominately glycerol monocaprylate, has been used to dissolve certain gallstones (Moctanin ® from Ethitek Pharmaceuticals). Structured lipids have been used in the treatment of various disease conditions either to enhance fatty acid uptake, improve caloric utilization, or alter intestinal flora balance. Glycerol monolaurate (GML) has a long history as a antibacterial agent. Bristol-Myers Squibb obtained U.S. patent 5,660,842 covering the use of glycerol monolaurate and lauric acid for helicobacter inhibition. Medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) have been used in the diet of certain types of Fatty Oxidation Disorder (FOD) patients. We have experience with all of these materials. We can help you develop the next generation of such products.
